The Golden Egg is legendary at my parent’s house on Easter. My dad has triumphed over the common child for the past 30 years. The city of Atlantis isn’t lost. My father simply hid it and nobody can find his hiding place. Really. He’s a genius. I hope to be just like him some day.
They say the only sure things in life are death and taxes. Agree to disagree. The list should include the inevitability that, should you decide to do anything “special” to commemorate the visiting of the tooth fairy, teeth will then ALWAYS come out at the absolute worst possible times. The worst! Now, the tooth fairy has been on my radar for over twenty-five years. I actually saved a few silver dollars from the bounty of my own childhood lost teeth, to pass down to my kids. Yes. I’m that much of an over planner. It’s a sickness. Needless to say, I had already decided exactly how the tooth fairy thing was going to happen. It included an adorable receipt commemorating the day. These light, gently spiced buns are one of my favorite Easter week traditions. I make them every Good Friday, always bringing them to my mom to enjoy with a cup of tea. This recipe from America’s Test Kitchen is a little time intensive, but not difficult and, it has never failed me. You get big, beautifully golden rolls that are a perfect breakfast or brunch treat. My little guy got in on the action last year and loved every minute.

My patience is being tested waiting for these eggs to hatch. I feel like the woman from the old Mervyn’s commercials. Open, open, open.
The last egg was laid 10 days ago. So by mid-week, we should have baby birdies. “Should” is a terrible word. It basically means something is going to happen…but probably not in the way you want it to. Ever. Just keep repeating “Patience is a virtue.”. Maybe I should take another nature walk today to take my mind off the eggs that are never going to hatch.
It’s come to my attention that not everyone has traditions upon traditions to draw from during holidays. Since Easter is just a week away, I thought I’d spend the next few days sharing a few of our Easter traditions. Starting with Resurrection Eggs. Resurrection Eggs are a way for even the youngest children to learn the story of Easter. We’ve been using these puppies since my oldest was only three. Twelve eggs have a symbol inside that help remind kids (and adults too) of the events leading up to the crucifixion, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ.
When I am independently wealthy and can spend my millions willie-nille however I please, I will purchase a personal photographer. Specifically, I will hire Ryan & Jacy to follow my children around. Twenty-four-seven. They’ll live in a guest house on my enormous property and take glorious photographs all day long.
Not so secretly, I wanted to discover baby birds today. Alas. Just Gazelle. Still hunkered down in the crook of her nest. Just Gazelle, giving me the evil eye as I ducked down to see around the rocks.

Gazelle is back on the nest this morning. I wonder if she was willing to leave yesterday because it was unseasonably warm at almost 70 degrees. No time to stay and chat today. Tulips are waiting for us at the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival!
We tried something a little different last Easter. Instead of dyeing eggs, we fingerprinted them. It was a fun change of pace and the kids loved coming up with designs.
