Oh baby! Gazelle (finally) has something other than an egg to watch over! Joy and rapture! She was still on the nest just an hour ago – but on a hunch, I checked again before lunch.

Science Observation: Bird’s Nest Day 16
These birds are never going to hatch. Ever. They’ll be the first eggs in the history of the universe to just decide to stay in there. Why am I watching a nest anyway? I don’t even like birds. Yet here I am like some kind of dopey idiot checking on a bunch of twigs and an evil mother bird who doesn’t follow any of the rules of her species. (sigh) As if you haven’t already figured it out…still no babies.
Science Observation: Bird’s Nest Day 15
A junco was feasting at our window box this morning. His head was much darker than Gazelle’s. It was almost black, rather than the slate grey of our momma bird. After a few quick clicks of the camera, he was gone, joining a lighter headed junco on the fence bordering our rockery.
Science Observation: Bird’s Nest Day 14
We spent the morning at our co-op, and since it was pouring rain and mostly dark when we left the house, I decided to leave the nest alone until we returned. Continue reading
Science Observation: Bird’s Nest Day 14
On a garden walk around my mom’s bursting-to-life yard, I spotted a little Chestnut-backed Chickadee, who obliged my camera bug and stopped for some photos. How considerate. Continue reading
Science Observation: Bird’s Nest Day 13
My patience is being tested waiting for these eggs to hatch. I feel like the woman from the old Mervyn’s commercials. Open, open, open.
The last egg was laid 10 days ago. So by mid-week, we should have baby birdies. “Should” is a terrible word. It basically means something is going to happen…but probably not in the way you want it to. Ever. Just keep repeating “Patience is a virtue.”. Maybe I should take another nature walk today to take my mind off the eggs that are never going to hatch.
Science Observation: Bird’s Nest Day 12
Not so secretly, I wanted to discover baby birds today. Alas. Just Gazelle. Still hunkered down in the crook of her nest. Just Gazelle, giving me the evil eye as I ducked down to see around the rocks.

Science Observation: Bird’s Nest Day 11
Gazelle is back on the nest this morning. I wonder if she was willing to leave yesterday because it was unseasonably warm at almost 70 degrees. No time to stay and chat today. Tulips are waiting for us at the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival!
Science Observation: Bird’s Nest Day 10
At last! After a week of peeking around corners and trying to stealthily sneak a few frames of Gazelle on the nest, I arrived for my morning snoop when she wasn’t there! In this process I’ve discovered something new about myself. I would make a terrible spy. Espionage is absolutely not my strong suit. I’d be captured or killed within 24-hours I’m sure. America is far safer with me at home. Continue reading
Stalker Walk
Since nothing new is happening in our nest, and I’m completely paranoid about bothering Gazelle too much now that she’s incubating eggs, the kids and I decided to go for a nature walk. We headed off into the woods, the munchkins toting their magnifying glasses while I lugged along my biggest lens. Continue reading
