Isaiah 55:1-2

“Come, all you who are thirsty,
come to the waters;
and you who have no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without cost.

Why spend money on what is not bread,
and your labor on what does not satisfy?
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,
and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.

God is just amazing to me. Each morning for the past three weeks, I have sat quietly before Him. Prior to reading my Bible, I pray that He would lead me to the scripture He would speak to me through. I start with a little devotional book, and go from there. Sometimes, a verse will practically jump from the page at me. Often, it’s from the devotional reading, but frequently it’s a chapter before, after or is one of the references in my footnotes. Without fail, every single day, I have felt touched by something in His word. I’m not sure how God does it – but the Bible is coming alive to me in ways it never has before. It seems interesting, profound and relevant in my life.

Take this passage from Isaiah, last night I made my first foray into the world of couponing, and then I get a few verses this morning about how to buy food with no money. I’ve been stressing big time over spending any money the past few weeks, even on food. My family has been eating from the cupboards, bottom drawer of the freezer and back shelf of the fridge since the beginning of the year. I basically haven’t gone grocery shopping in three weeks because I want to use the food in the house – even if it means dumping three cans of various beans, tomatoes and broth into a crock-pot and continuing to add various things until it tastes edible. It’s been an adventure, especially for a girl like me, who, follows the recipe EXACTLY up til now.

God spoke right to where I am this morning. He’s got the biggest most awesome grocery store on the planet, full of exactly the kind of indulgent decadent food I crave, and it’s all free. His word is food for my soul. Delightful, rich and abundant, and I don’t have to spend a dime on it. Although my budget (or lack of one) may force me to choke down (GASP!) rice and beans a couple times a week these days – a diet feasting on the words of the Lord will never leave me lacking. Consuming what He serves me on a daily basis fills my heart and mind with abundance I’ll never find at Albertsons…not even with a coupon.
