Devotional – Walking Away

Hebrews 4:13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

I read once that integrity is doing the right thing – even when nobody is watching. The fact is, it’s really difficult for our private thoughts and actions to mirror those up for public consumption. Even harder for me than achieving personal integrity is the unrest I feel when in my relationships with others, things don’t add up. There’s a disquieting of my mind as I try to think thru conversations and understand the motivation of others. There are things in my life I don’t want to talk about with others. Areas I’m ashamed of. While I can be honest with myself about where my personal convictions stand, I will never know the whole picture behind someone else’s actions. I cannot possibly hope to understand what drives others responses in life. The full truth of where they are. But God does. Continue reading

Devotional – Rules…and Wisdom

2 Timothy 2:5 And also if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.

This verse is kind of a side note for today – but I had to put it in here. I get a lot of grief for being competitive, clarifying the rules and expecting everyone to play by the established understood guidelines. In life, in sports, games – whatever. I want to know what the rules are, and I want everyone to be playing by those rules. Cheaters drive me nuts. Seriously. Absolutely crazy. I do not understand why on earth you would cheat to be the winner. What exactly did you win, if you cheated? I have always said that winning is worthless if you didn’t get there honestly. I learned that lesson after I cheated to win when playing “Sweet Valley High” with my sisters in 7th grade. Yeah sure I made it to the dance and had my boyfriend in tow…but I felt like a total loser because I knew I cheated. And now look – I found in my devotional reading today this verse that totally backs me up. Hooray. Now, on to the real guts of what God taught me today. Continue reading

God’s Gifts – Some Assembly May Be Required

Once we’ve realized who we are (princesses!) and stopped comparing our gifts to others, and we recognize a mature request – we have to get past the assembly process.

Some Assembly May Be Required

We all have natural giftings – things that require very little work. For example. I love to talk. I have never had a problem talking. Individually, in public, whatever – I can communicate on any level. Some people – maybe my husband – don’t necessarily view that as a great gift, cause he has to listen to me constantly, but there you go. There are times when you see a “gift” in another’s life that you want – that is not out of jealousy or envy, but an honest desire to grow. You take it to the Lord and it’s a mature request. In my own life I did this a few years ago. I wanted to be more merciful, able to give grace to others – because I was lacking big time in those areas. I wanted it to be pre-assembled. Ready to use mercy conveniently packaged up in a little box. I wanted to have it, and take it out whenever I needed it – put it away when I was done. But that’s not exactly how it works. God’s Gifts – “I Want A Pony”

Yesterday I discussed Keeping Up With the Joneses as the first reason we sometimes miss God’s gifts in our lives. Today, reason two – “I Want A Pony!”

This is a pretty self-explanatory statement. Most would consider asking for a pony to be an unreasonable request. Actually receiving a pony is a totally extravagant gift. Now, there may be someone out there thinking to yourself “I had a pony” “She was a beautiful pony”. Let me just say this to you. I am so happy for you that you had a pony. That’s an amazing thing. But I am so sorry for your husband that he’s got to live up to a gift like that forever. Unless you grew up on a farm, or in Duvall (private joke for my Evergreen family) – having a pony is a pretty over the top gift. One of my favorite Seinfeld moments was this one. Ah, cracks me up. God’s Gifts – “Keeping Up With the Joneses”

Between making and packaging a couple hundred truffles, setting up for a luncheon, speaking at that luncheon and throwing a birthday party for my son – I haven’t had time to think lately, much less blog or bake. Wow. What a week.

I wanted to share with you all what I spoke on over the weekend at my church’s annual ladies Christmas luncheon. Here’s part 1…

God’s Gifts Are GOOD!
(and He wants to give them)

Matt 7:11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him.

We all love giving gifts to our kids. It’s just plain fun. God wants to bless us with gifts too – and His budget is limitless. But there are some things that keep us from experiencing the fullness of God’s gifts in our lives.

Devotional – What Do I Do?

Romans 7:15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

Nutshell. There it is. My constant struggle. Why do I do what I do not want to do? I’ll admit, it kind of feels good to know that I’m not the only one. That people have been working thru this same issue for the past 2000 years. Supposedly “good” people. Spiritual people. People God used mightily, have struggled with the back and forth tug of war between the good they desire to do and the evil they keep doing – in spite of all their good intentions. Continue reading

Devotional – Teaching The Teacher

Romans 2:21 You, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal?

Yesterday, as I sat to have my quiet time with the Lord, it was with a somewhat broken spirit. I felt totally under attack and a little defeated. I’m sure it’s because Saturday I’m speaking at a luncheon for my church. God has given me a message that I’m really excited about – and I know He is doing a mighty work within the women of  Evergreen. It’s amazing how, when you’re seeking the Lord and following His will, being used by Him – the enemy of our souls hones in on your weak spots and starts scheming to derail you. That’s where I was yesterday. I’d taken a direct hit to my soft underbelly and was dragging myself to God for medical assistance. Continue reading

Devotional – Thanksgiving

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18  Rejoice always,  pray without ceasing,  in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Note that it doesn’t say “Rejoice when you are happy, pray when you need something, give thanks for the good in your life.”. But somehow, that’s how we all live. We think joy is an emotion, a feeling that comes when we get what we want. Prayers come much quicker when there’s something in it for us and our thankful heart turns cold when we think God isn’t being fair. Continue reading

Devotional – Wrong All The Time

Matthew 11:18-19 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”

Back to the same lessons. God keeps bringing me scriptures to drive home this point. So, I’m sorry if I seem redundant to you – I’m only passing along what I feel the Lord keeps showing me. It’s just your bad luck to follow a blog written by an (apparently) slow learner.  Continue reading

Devotional – Unexpected Gifts

Matthew 7:11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

It is amazing to me how faithful God is. Just the other day, I was trying to remember where this verse was located. The passage came to mind as I was considering what to speak on for an upcoming luncheon – but I couldn’t remember where it was located. I thought about it again this afternoon as I was decorating the Christmas tree with my kids. Thinking about gifts as input into our lives. How much I love my kids – how much I want to teach them. The lessons I want to give to them so they don’t have to learn the hard way. And, yes – about presents. Gifts. How much fun it is to give things to them. The delight on their faces. The joy it brings them. Made a mental note to look up the reference to this verse during my devotional – but God did it for me. It was in the reading today.
